For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light…
Proverbs 6:23

Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.  For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished.  Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and so teaches others, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:17-20

Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12

Many will say to Me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?”  And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me you who practice lawlessness.”
Matthew 7:22-23

At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath through the grainfields, and His disciples became hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat.  But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Behold, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath.”  But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he became hungry, he and his companions; how he entered the house of God, and they ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those with him, but for the priests alone?  Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests (cf 1 Pet 2:9) in the temple (cf. 1 Cor 3:16-17, 2 Cor 6:16, Eph 2:21-22) break the Sabbath, and are innocent?  But I say to you, that something greater than the temple is here.  But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire compassion, and not a sacrifice’, you would not have condemned the innocent.  For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
And departing from there, He went into their synagogue.  And behold, there was a man with a withered hand.  And they questioned Him, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”–in order that they might accuse Him.  And He said to them, “What man shall there be among you, who shall have one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it, and lift it out?  Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep!  So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”  Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!”  And he stretched it out, and it was restored to health, like the other.  But the Pharisees went out, and counseled together against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
Matthew 12:1-14

For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.  For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Matthew 14:3-4

Therefore just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.  The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 14:40-42

Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, “Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?  For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”  And He answered and said to them, “And why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?  For God said (some manuscripts read “commanded, saying”), ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’  But you say, ‘Whoever shall say to his father or mother, “Anything of mine you might have been helped by has been given to God,” he is not to honor his father or his mother.’  And thus you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
Matthew 15:1-6

And some Pharisees came to Him, testing Him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause at all?”  And He answered and said, “Have you not read, that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh’?  Consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh.  What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”  They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?”  He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart, Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.  And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
Matthew 19:3-9

And behold, one came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”  And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good?  There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”  He said to Him, “Which ones?”  And Jesus said, “You shall not commit murder; Your shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”  Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”  But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieved; for he was one who owned much property.
Matthew 19:16-22

“Tell us therefore, what do You think?  Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?”…”Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?…Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”
Matthew 22:17,18,21

When the Pharisees heard that He had put the Sadducees to silence, they gathered themselves together.  And one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”  And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the great and foremost commandment.  The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:34-40

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
Matthew 23:23

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.  Even so you too outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matthew 23:27-28

At that time many will fall away and will deliver up one another and hate one another.  And many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many.  And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.  But the one who endures to the end, he shall be saved.
Matthew 24:10-13

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Matthew 28:19-20

Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is.  It is like a man, away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert.  Therefore be on the alert‑‑for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, at cockcrowing, or in the morning–lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.  And what I say to you I say to all, “Be on the alert!”
Mark 13:33-37

[Zacharias and Elizabeth] were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.
Luke 1:6

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  And He said to him, “What is written in the Law?  How does it read to you?”  And he answered and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”  And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”  But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Luke 10:25-29

Now his older son (the brother of the prodigal son) was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.  And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things might be.  And he said to him, “Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.”  But he became angry, and was not willing to go in (to the kingdom); and his father came out and began entreating him.  But he answered and said to his father, “Look!  For so many years I have been serving you, and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a kid, that I might be merry with my friends; but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your wealth with harlots, you killed the fattened calf for him.”  And he said to him, “My child, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours.  But we had to be merry and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.”
Luke 15:25-32

The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since then the gospel of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.  But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.  Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.
Luke 16:16-18

Now the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed after, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.  And they returned and prepared spices and perfumes.  And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
Luke 23:55-56

For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
John 1:17

Jesus said to him, “Arise, take up your pallet, and walk.”  And immediately the man became well, and took up his pallet and began to walk.  Now it was the Sabbath on that day.  Therefore the Jews were saying to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet.”
John 5:8-10

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you carries out the law?  Why do you seek to kill Me?”  The multitude answered, “You have a demon!  Who seeks to kill You?”
John 7:19-20

For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.  No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative.  I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.  This commandment I received from My Father.
John 10:17-18

And Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me.  And he who beholds Me beholds the One who sent Me.  I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.  And if anyone hears My sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.  He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.  For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak.  And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.”
John 12:44-50

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all men will know that your are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
John 13:34-35

If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you….He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will disclose Myself to him….If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him.  He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.  These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 14:15-17,21,23-26

Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.  If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love.  These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.  This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his (own fleshly) life for his friends.  You are My friends, if you do what I command you.  No longer do I call you slaves (to sin), for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you,.  You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give to you.  This I command you, that you love one another.
John 15:9-17

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after he had by the Holy Spirit given commandments to the apostles whom he had chosen…
Acts 1:1-2

Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute?  And they killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become; you who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.
Acts 7:52-53

Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through Him everyone who believes is freed (justified) from all things, from which you could not be freed (justified) through the Law of Moses.
Acts 13:38-39

And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.  For thus the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have placed you as a light for the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the end of the earth.’ (Is 42:6, 49:6)”
Acts 13:46-47

Certain ones of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, stood up saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to direct (or “command”, parangello) them to observe the Law of Moses….James said, “It is my judgment that we do not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles, but that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood.  (Could these be the same commandments enjoined upon God-fearing Gentiles who loosely attached themselves to Judaism without becoming full-fledged Jews by circumcision?  Cf. pg. 548 of Smith’s Bible Dictionary under article on proselytes).  For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”  (I.e., the purpose of the restrictions enjoined upon the Gentile converts was to promote peace and unity with their Jewish brethren).
Acts 15:5,19-21

Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring (or “commanding“, parangello) to men that all everywhere should repent…
Acts 17:30

And after Paul had greeted them, he began to relate one by one the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.  And when they heard it they began glorifying God; and they said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the Law; and they have been told about you, that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children nor to walk according to the customs.  What then is to be done?  They will certainly hear that you have come.  Therefore do this that we tell you.  We have four men who are under a vow; take them and purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses in order that they may shave their heads; and all will know that there is nothing to the things which they have been told about you, but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the Law.  But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we wrote, having decided that they should abstain from meat sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from fornication.”  Then Paul took the men, and the next day, purifying himself along with them, went into the temple, giving notice of the completion of the days of purification, until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them (cf. 1 Cor 9:20-21).
Acts 21:19-26

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and  although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Romans 1:28-32

God will render to every man according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation….There is no partiality with God.  For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law;  and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; for not the hearers of the Law are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified….Indeed circumcision is of value, if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.  If therefore the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements (lit. the righteousness or ordinances, grk. dikaiomata.  Cf. 1:32) of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?  (Notice here that Paul understands the requirements of the Law to not include circumcision).  And will not he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who through the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law.  For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.  But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
Romans 2:6-8,11-13,25-29

Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.  But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith….Where then is boasting?  It is excluded.  By what kind of lawOf works?  No, but by a law of faith.  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.  Or is God the God of Jews only?  Is He not the God of Gentiles also?  Yes, of Gentiles also, since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one.  Do we then nullify the Law through faith?  May it never be?  On the contrary, we establish the Law.
Romans 3:19-25,27-31

Now to the one who works, his wage is not reckoned as a favor, but as what is due.  But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works:  “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered.”
Romans 4:4-7

For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.  For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, neither is there violation.  For this reason it is by faith, that it might be in accordance with grace, in order that the promise may be certain to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
Romans 4:13-16
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned–for until law (or the Law) sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law….And law (or the Law) came in that the transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
What shall we say then?  Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase?  May it never be!  How shall we who died to sin still live in it?…Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace.  What then?  Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?  May it never be!  Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?  But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.  I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.  For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.
Romans 5:12-13,20-21, 6:1-2,12-19
Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives?  For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband.  So then if, while her husband is living, she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress, though she is joined to another man.  Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit for God.  For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.  But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
What shall we say then?  Is the Law sin?  May it never be!  On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”  (Notice that the Law from which Paul says we have been released must include the ten commandments as he here refers to the tenth commandment).  But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.  And I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive, and I died; and this commandment, which was to result in life proved to result in death for me; for sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.  So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.  Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me?  May it never be!  Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.  For we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.  (This is from what Christ redeems us!)  For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.  But if I do the very thing I do not wish to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that it is good.  So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which indwells me.  For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.   For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish.  But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.  I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good.   For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.  Wretched man that I am!  Who will set me free from the body of this death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you (or me) free from the law of sin and of death.  For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirement (lit. the righteousness or ordinance, NIV = righteous requirement.  Cf. 1:32 and 2:26) of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.  However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.  But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.  And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.  But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.  So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh–for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die;  but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.
Romans 7:1-8:17
What shall we say then?  That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law.  Why?  Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works (some manuscripts add “of the law“).  They stumbled over the stumbling stone, just as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.  For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.  For not knowing about God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God (which is found only in Christ).  For Christ is the end (or goal) of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.  For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness.  But the righteousness based on faith speaks thus, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”  But what does it say?  “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (Deut 30:11-14)–that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.  For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”  for there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon Him; for “Whoever will call upon the Name of the Lord will be saved”.
Romans 9:30-10:13

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.  For this, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  Love does no wrong to a neighbor; love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:8-10

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable.  All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by (i.e., become a slave to) anything.  Food is for the stomach, and the stomach for food; but God will do away with both of them.  Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord; and the Lord is for the body.
1 Corinthians 6:12-13

But to the married I give instructions (or “command“, parangello), not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband (but if she does leave, let her remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not send his wife away.
1 Corinthians 7:10-11

Only, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk.  And thus I direct in all the churches.  Was any man called already circumcised?  Let him not become uncircumcised (i.e., in non-observance of the Mosaic Law).  Has anyone been called in uncircumcision?  Let him not be circumcised (i.e., become like a Jew in observance of the Mosaic Law).  Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.  Let each man remain in that condition in which he was called.  Were you called while a slave?  Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that.  For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord’s freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ’s slave.  You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.  Brethren, let each man remain with God in that condition in which he was called.
1 Corinthians 7:17-24

For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more.  And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law (hupo nomos), as under the Law, though not being myself under the Law, that I might win those who are under the Law; To those who are without law (anomos) as without law, though not being without the law of God (anomos theou) but under the law of Christ (ennomos christoi, in the law of Christ), that I might win those who are without law (anomous).
1 Corinthians 9:19-21

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable.  All things are lawful, but not all things edify.  Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.
1 Corinthians 10:23-24

As in all the churches of the saints, let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them subject themselves, just as the law also says.  (Interestingly, nowhere in the OT law does it specifically say this, but is perhaps inferred from Gen 3:16.  Perhaps Paul has in mind some other law, for the NT speaks fairly extensively on this: cf. 1 Cor 11:3, Eph 5:22, Col 3:18, 1 Tim 2:12, Tit 2:5, and especially 1 Pet 3:1,5 that does relate back to the OT).  And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.  Was it from you that the word of God first went forth?  Or has it come to you only?  If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment.  But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.
1 Corinthians 14:33-38

But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.  O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?”  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57

Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:14

Such a man was caught up into Paradise, and heard inexpressible words, about which it is not lawful for a man to speak.
2 Corinthians 12:4
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.  For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision.  And the rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.  But when I saw that they were not walking straightly about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?  We are Jews by nature, and not sinners from among the Gentiles; nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin?  May it never be!  For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.  For through the Law I died to the Law, that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.  I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”
You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified?  This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit (through whom righteousness comes, because He leads us to fulfill the law of God, Romans 8:1-14) by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?  Are you so foolish?  Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?  Did you suffer so many things in vain–if indeed it was in vain?  Does He then, who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law or by hearing with faith?  Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.  Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.  And the Scripture, forseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations shall be blessed in you.”  So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.  For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.”  Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for “The righteous man shall live by faith.”  However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live by them.”  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us–for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”–in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.  Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.  He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.  What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.  For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promiseWhy the Law thenIt was added because of transgressions (the law came to teach us that the only way to be free from sins is to die), having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed should come to whom the promise had been made.  Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.  Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God?  May it never be!  For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.  But the Scripture has shut up all men under sin (again, this is why the Law came, for recall that the power of sin is the law), that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.  Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faithBut now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor (i.e., the Law).  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ (for in baptism we are buried with Christ into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.  For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, Rom 6:4-5).  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father.  So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world.  But when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons….
Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law?  For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman.  But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise….
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.  Behold, I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, that you are under obligation to keep the whole law.  You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.  For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.  You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth?  This persuasion did not come from Him who call you.  A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.  For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  But if you bite and devour one another, take care lest you be consumed by one another.
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.  For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.  Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.  Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.  Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted.  Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ.
Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.  For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.  But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.  For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.  And those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.
Gal 2:11-4:5, 4:21-23, 5:1-9, 5:13-6:2, 6:12-16

For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one, and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.
Ephesians 2:14-16

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
Ephesians 6:1-3

Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision; for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh.  If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more:  circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews: as to the Law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless.  But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.  More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, and may by found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Philippians 3:2-11
Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you rceived from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you may excel still more.  For you know what commandments (parangelia) we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.  For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you.  For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification.  Consequently, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you.
Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia.  But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to our own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded (parangello) you; so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.
1 Thessalonians 4:1-12

Let no one in any way deceive you, for the day of the Lord will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.  Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things?  And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he may be revealed.  For the mystery of lawlessness (Satan in the hearts of false sons perfecting them after his nature, just as the mystery of godliness, 1 Tim 3:16, is Christ Jesus in the hearts of the true sons perfecting them after His nature) is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.  And then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-8

Now we command (parangello) you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep aloof from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us….For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order (or “command you”, parangello): if anyone will not work, neither let him eat.  For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies.  Now such persons we command (parangello) and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.
2 Thessalonians 3:6,10-12

As I urged you upon my departure fro Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus, in order that you may instruct (or “command“, parangello) certain men not to teach strange doctrines, nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere spectulation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.  But the goal of our instruction (or “commandment“, parangelia) is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.  For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.  But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted….This command (parangelia) I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concering you, that by them you may fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience.
1 Timothy 1:3-11,18-19a

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from food, which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.  For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.  In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.  But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women.  On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.  It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance.  For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.  Prescribe (or “command“, parangello) and teach these things.
1 Tim 4:1-11

Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brother, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.  Honor widows who are widows indeed; but if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to practice peity in regard to their own family, and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.  Now she who is a widow indeed, and who has been left alone has fixed her hope on God, and continues in entreaties and prayers night and day.  But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she live.  Prescribe (or “Command“, parangello) these things as well, so that they may be above reproach.
1 Timothy 5:1-7

But flee from these things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.  Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.  I charge (or “command”, parangello) you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep the (possibly “this”) commandment (entolen) without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Timothy 6:11-14

Instruct (or “command“, parangello) those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy; to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.
1 Timothy 6:17-19

…Christ Jesus; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
Titus 2:14

And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have commandment in the Law to collect a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these are descended from Abraham.  But the one whose genealogy is not traced from them (Melchizedek) collected a tenth from Abraham, and blessed the one who had the promises.
Hebrews 7:5-6

Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron?  For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.  For the one concerning whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.  For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.  And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement (lit. a carnal or fleshly commandment), but according to the power of an indestructible life.  For it is witnessed of Him, “Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”  For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
Hebrews 7:11-19

It was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.  For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law appoints a Son, made perfect forever.
Hebrews 7:26-28

Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law; who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things…
Hebrews 8:4-5

Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will effect a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah….For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord:  I will put My laws into their minds, and I will write them upon their hearts.  And I will be their God, and they shall be My people….When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete.  But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
Hebrews 8:8,10,13

Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.  For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.”  And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.  And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Hebrews 9:18-22

For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never by the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.
Hebrews 10:1

After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou hast not desired, nor hast Thou taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Thy will.”  He takes away the first in order to establish the second.  By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.  For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are (being) sanctified.  And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, and upon their mind I will write them,”  He then says, “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”  Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Hebrews 10:8-18

For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.  Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
Hebrews 10:26-29

The one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.
James 1:25

If however, you are fulfilling the royal law (or, law of our King), according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.  But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.  For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.  For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder,”  Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.  So speak and so act, as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty.  For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
James 2:8-13

Do not speak against one another, brethren.  He who speaks against a brother, or judges his brother, speaks against the law, and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge of it.  There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?
James 4:11-12

He rescued Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day with their lawless deeds).
2 Peter 2:7-8
For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.  For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them.  It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.
2 Peter 2:20-3:2

And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.  The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;  but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected.  By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.  Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.  On the other hand, I am writing you a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.  The one who says he is in the light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.  The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.  But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
1 John 2:3-11

Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
1 John 3:4

Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.  And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.  And the one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.  And we know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
1 John 3:21-24

If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.  And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.  Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and whoever loves the Father  loves the child born of Him.  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.  For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.  For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.
1 John 4:20-5:4

I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received commandment to do from the Father.  And now I ask you, lady, not as writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.  And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments.  This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.
2 John 4-6

And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
Revelation 12:17

Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
Revelation 14:12

Blessed are those who do his commandments (KJV, alternate text reads “wash their robes”), that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.
Revelation 22:14

What then shall we say in summary of all this?

Let us note first that there are two types of law spoken of in the NT.  For Paul wrote that he was not under the law (1 Cor 9:20), meaning the law of the Old Testament with all of its commandments and decrees and ordinances.  The nature of this law is a list of do’s and don’ts; i.e., don’t commit murder, don’t steal, do eat this, don’t eat that, etc….It is a law designed to reveal and manifest the sinful nature of man and make clear his need for a Savior to deliver him from his cursed and carnal state (Rom 7:7-13).  For it can only result in condemning him to death, because as a slave to sin he cannot help but break God’s most holy law.  It is impossible to be perfected by this law, for it is impossible for one to keep the righteous requirements of it because of our fallen nature of sin.  For this reason Paul calls it the law of sin and death (Rom 8:2): it is a law that defines sin and states very plainly that we will die because of our sin.

However, although Paul writes that he was not under this law of the OT, he continues that neither was he without the law of God, but in the law of Christ (1 Cor 9:20,21).  To be in Christ is to be led by His Spirit, and to be in the law of Christ is to follow in faith where the Holy Spirit leads us.  To obey the law of Christ is to obey the Spirit of Christ who leads those who are in Christ.  This new “law” found in the NT, in contrast to the law of the OT, speaks of character and motives and religion of the heart; whereas OT law is a law for the flesh, NT law is a law for the heart.  Indeed, it seems that the NT writers took great pains to avoid as much as possible the lists of do’s and don’ts that characterized the OT law.  Even the list in Acts 15:20 seems motivated by the specific circumstances to promote peace and love between Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ (cf. Acts 15:21).  In that context we should ask ourselves why the apostles didn’t simply enjoin upon the Gentiles the Ten Commandments.  The answer is because when we enter into Christ and the new covenant with God effected by His blood, the old man of sin dies and our cursed carnal flesh nature is buried with Christ.  With the sin nature dead the law is also dead and necessarily of no effect–for there is no longer any need for it, for “law is not made for a righteous man”.  Thus we die to the OT law with all of its do’s and don’ts, its ordinances and decrees, and enter into Christ to be led by His Spirit to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law, which is the law of our King, the royal law that is summarized very simply as to walk in love.

As it says in Hebrews 7:12, when there is a change of priesthood (i.e., from the priesthood of Aaron to that of Christ) of necessity there is also a change of the law.  The law of Christ that we enter into when we make covenant with Him overlaps the OT law; indeed, it is the fulfillment of it and that to which the OT law points, i.e., to walk in love with God and our neighbor.  But in Christ we die to the OT law and are no longer bound by all of its decrees and ordinances–only by Christ’s law to walk in love.  How that is worked out must depend on every individual and circumstance as he is led by the Spirit of God, who writes God’s law on our hearts.  In Christ we are to be obedient to the still small voice of the Spirit applying God’s law of love in our hearts.  In this way we serve Him in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter (Rom 7:6).

Let us carefully note that in Christ Jesus we are dead to all of the OT law, including not only the ceremonial and civil laws, but also the Ten Commandments (cf. Rom 7:6-7).  That does not in any way mean that as believers in Christ we are free to covet or commit adultery or murder.  What it means is that in Christ we are free from the letter of the Mosaic law to be led by the Holy Spirit to fulfill the “righteous requirements of the law”, which is all the moral principle underlying the decrees and ordinances of the OT law and that is summarized by the commands to love God and love our neighbor.  This is our salvation, for “the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” (2 Cor 3:6).  And again, how this is worked out practically is dependent upon every individual and circumstance as he is led by the Spirit of God.  For evidence that we are actually being led by the Spirit of God we have the example of the New Testament believers and their instructions as inspired by this same Spirit.  If we are truly being led by the same Holy Spirit who led the early believers described in the NT, then we can expect that our lives will come to look like theirs.  We should also note, however, that through ignorance or willful disobedience we are certainly able to violate the new law of Christ and sin against God.  Indeed, any word or thought or deed not motivated by love violates the commandment of our Lord.  As James says, “If you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law (i.e. Christ’s law to walk in love) as transgressors.”  In this case it is we ourselves who are rebuilding the sin nature which in Christ we destroyed, for certainly Christ is not the minister of our sin.

Very simply then, if we are in Christ then we are being led by His Spirit to put to death the carnal flesh and are abiding in righteousness.  To enter into Christ we must die to sin.  When we die to sin we also die to the OT law with all of its commandments and ordinances and decrees and are led by the Holy Spirit of Christ.  He writes the law of God on our hearts and leads us to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law, which is to walk in love with God and our neighbor.  This is what all of the OT law pointed to.  As we are led by the Spirit we bear the fruit of the Spirit, against which there is no law.  In this way we are not under the law.  We are not under the law because we are not breaking the law but being led by the Spirit to fulfill the righteous requirements of the OT law, which is to walk in love.  This is what it means to be in the law of Christ.  For again, though we are not under the legalistic law of the OT, we are not without the law of God, but in the law of Christ.

Let us carefully note that this is a walk of faith.  Thus, when we cease to have the faith of Abraham to follow the Spirit of God where he leads us (which is into the land of inheritance, the kingdom of God, righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, cf. Rom 14:17) then we fall from the grace of abiding in Christ through His Spirit.  The evidence that this has happened is when our hearts condemn us that we have sinned against God by violating the law His Spirit has written on our hearts, perhaps even by trying to be perfected after the flesh by obeying the ordinances and decrees of the OT law, which is impossible.  In this case we are rebuilding the sin nature that we once destroyed to enter into Christ, and we prove ourselves to be transgressors of the law (Gal 2:18); i.e., if we fall back into sin then the law of God which is now written on our hearts condemns us, for “the law is made for sinners”.

The goal then of those who want to follow Christ and be obedient to the gospel is to die to sin and be led by His Spirit to put to death the deeds of the body.  If we do this, then as Paul writes in Rom 8:13, we will live.  For if we truly die to sin and are buried with Christ, then the law and its commandments no longer have any effect upon us.  For before the law came, we were alive, but when the commandment came, sin became alive and we died.  Very simply, when we die to sin the commandment can no longer arouse the sinful nature because it is dead.

Romans 7:4-6
