For what purpose did God create the sun, moon and stars? See Gen 1:14-15. How do we know that these heavenly lights are only types of a much greater light that comes from the Lord? See Gen 1:3 and observe that the very first thing God created as a reflection of His own nature (1Jo 1:5) was light, and that was before He created the sun, moon and stars in Gen 1:14; cf. Isa 60:19-20, Rev 21:23-25, 22:5. Notice also that the sun, moon and stars reflect the nature of God in separating the day from the night and the light from the darkness (see Gen 1:4,18); why then is it natural that they would also come to represent the light of general revelation by which men may come to know about God? Cf. Psa 19:1-4a, Rom 1:19-20, 10:18. In what way is the greater light that rules the day like Christ as the source of all light and life on earth? Cf. Psa 19:4b-6, Mat 5:45, Rev 1:16. How was that light darkened at Christ’s death? See Luk 23:44-45. How is that light darkened on a daily basis as the earth turns away from its light? How is that like men in their sin?
In what way is the lesser light that rules the night like God’s people on earth as it reflects the light of the sun, but also waxes and wanes in its brightness and ability to separate the light from the darkness? In what way do God’s people separate day from night and light from darkness simply by walking in righteousness and so reflecting the nature of God, so as to likewise represent the light of general revelation by which men come to know about God? See Pro 4:18, Isa 60:1, Dan 12:3, Mat 5:14-16, Joh 5:35, Phil 2:15; cf. Rom 13:12-13, Eph 5:8-9, 1Th 5:4-8, 1Pe 2:9-12. In this context, what is the significance that the Hebrew word used to separate the light from the darkness in Genesis 1 is also used throughout Scripture to separate the holy from the profane? Cf. Exo 26:33, Lev 10:10, 20:24-26, 1Ki 8:53, Ezr 6:21, Eze 22:26, 42:20. What does this remind us about the importance of living holy, sanctified lives so as to be a light of general revelation to others even though we never have opportunity to shine more specific revelation upon them? In what way is this light of general revelation darkened as the people of God themselves reject the light of Christ and pursue worldly messiahs in order to save their lives in the world? Cf. 2Th 2:3, 1Ti 4:1, 2Ti 3:1-5, 4:3-4.
